Postpartum Anxiety vs. Postpartum Depression: What NJ Moms Should Know
Postpartum anxiety and postpartum depression are different conditions with different symptoms. Here’s what NJ moms need to know — and how to get the right support.
If you’ve been struggling since your baby arrived, you may have Googled “postpartum depression” — because that’s the term most people know. But what you’re feeling might not match what you read. Maybe you’re not crying all the time. Maybe you feel more wired than low. Maybe it’s worry, not sadness, that’s consuming you.
That’s because postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety are two distinct conditions. And knowing which one you’re dealing with matters — because the most effective treatment for each can look a little different.
Postpartum Depression: The Basics
Postpartum depression (PPD) typically involves persistent low mood, a sense of emptiness, tearfulness, difficulty finding pleasure in things, or feeling disconnected from your baby or yourself. It often includes fatigue, changes in appetite, and a loss of motivation. It’s caused by a combination of hormonal shifts, sleep deprivation, major life change, and sometimes prior mental health history.
Postpartum Anxiety: What Makes It Different
Postpartum anxiety (PPA) is characterized by fear, worry, and hyperarousal rather than sadness. If you have PPA, you might:
• Feel like something terrible is about to happen, even when everything is fine
• Have a hard time sleeping even when you have the opportunity
• Feel physically tense, jittery, or keyed up most of the time
• Find yourself checking on the baby constantly or seeking reassurance repeatedly
• Experience intrusive, scary thoughts you can’t control
It’s worth noting that postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety often co-occur — you can experience both at the same time.
