Postpartum Anxiety in New Jersey: What It Feels Like and Where to Get Help

You had the baby. You’re home. And you keep waiting for the wave of joy that everyone talks about to arrive — but instead, what you feel is worried. Constantly, exhaustingly worried.

If you’re a new mom in New Jersey feeling like your mind won’t stop, you’re not alone. Postpartum anxiety is one of the most common — and most underdiagnosed — perinatal mental health conditions affecting women in NJ and across the country.

What Postpartum Anxiety Actually Feels Like

Most people have heard of postpartum depression (PPD), but postpartum anxiety is just as common and often goes unrecognized. Unlike PPD — which typically presents as sadness, disconnection, or low mood — postpartum anxiety tends to look like:

    • Racing, intrusive thoughts you can’t turn off

    • Physical tension, a tight chest, or shortness of breath

    • Needing to check on the baby constantly, even when you know they’re fine

    • Catastrophic thinking — always imagining the worst possible scenario

    • Irritability and feeling “on edge” much of the time

    • Difficulty sleeping even when the baby sleeps

It can also show up as postpartum OCD — intrusive thoughts about harm coming to the baby that feel terrifying and foreign to you. These thoughts don’t mean you’re dangerous. They mean you need support.

Postpartum Anxiety vs. “Just Being a New Mom”

There’s a cultural myth that being anxious as a new parent is just normal — something to push through. And while some worry is natural, postpartum anxiety is different. It’s persistent, disproportionate, and it gets in the way. If anxiety is stealing your sleep, your connection with your baby, or your ability to function, that’s not something to just push through. That’s something to treat.

Getting Help for Postpartum Anxiety in New Jersey

The good news: postpartum anxiety responds well to therapy. Specifically, working with a therapist who holds a Perinatal Mental Health Certification (PMH-C) means you’re getting care from someone with advanced, specialized training in exactly what you’re going through.

At Virtue Counseling, I offer postpartum anxiety therapy in New Jersey via telehealth — which means you can attend sessions from your home, your car, or wherever works for you. I serve moms across the Shore area and throughout NJ statewide, including Sea Girt, Manasquan, Toms River, Red Bank, Freehold, and beyond.

You don’t have to just survive the newborn phase. You deserve to actually be present for it. If you’re ready to talk, I’d love to hear from you.
